The "altar" in the Old Testament was a shadow or type of the atoning sacrifice the Savior, the Lamb of the World would make for the salvation of all of mankind. It was a scared symbol where prayers and covenants were said and made and where animal sacrifices foreshadowed that one culminating event in eternity. The altar is a scared symbol of that divine sacrifice of Jesus Christ. The symbolism of the sacrament table (altar) with it's white linens represent the burial cloth with the broken body (bread) and blood (water/wine) that was shed. The altar represents Christ in all ways. Christ is always the center, the middle, where all things emanate out and then back to the center. Within a prayer circle the altar is the center, a vivid symbolism of the Atonement.
